The USR® 56K* USB Modem, now with voice‡, delivers the performance and reliability USR is known for, in a compact, flexible form factor. This controller-based modem integrates powerful communications processing functions into the modem itself, for assured performance without sapping your computer's processing power. On the internet via old dialup using a US Robotics 5637 USB modem. This is a 'late 2006 iMac with a 2.16GHz core 2 duo'. All my older USB modems would not work with OSX 10.7 and this tiny modem. This is a Real Hardware Modem within a USB form without requiring an external power source.
For Linux, recompile your kernel for including USB Modem CDC ACM support; or navigate to Device Drivers > USB support > USB Modem (CDC ACM) support. If you're using a binary Linux distribution, you may need to additionally load the cdc-acm.ko driver/module. PROS 1) A real hardware modem, not a win-modem or soft-modem. 2) No external power source, requiring to be left on 24/7. CONS 1) No speaker or audio while connecting. I, as likely most, enjoy hearing the modem link-up with the remote ISP and then silencing the speaker after a successful link-up. Without hearing the negotiating, it's difficult to know if a successful connection is being made or has been made without watching the terminal. 2) Could have been neat to have a few more blinking lights and toggle switches, but I'm not at all complaining with the current package.
REAL Hardware Modem. Not a “softmodem” BS!
I couldn’t care less about data or fax, but wanted a TAPI voice compliment modem to cheaply and quickly add autopatch capability to my amateur radio repeater. This worked great. I, or select users, can now access my phone Linked over radio. It also works as a basic old-school modem using old-school terminal emulator. Upgrade to the latest/last firmware first, available on USR’s website. USR always did make good “hardware” modems. Stay away from those “softmodem” that use your computer’s resources instead of having real hardware. Software for the 5637 is pretty generic, but I don’t use it anyway. Caveat: The voice functions, if you want to use it as an answering machine (or autopatch as I’m doing), seems to only work correctly on 32-bit systems. I had issues on 64-but, but fortunately still had an old 32-bit laptop laying around that worked perfectly for this. There is a pretty good voicemail answering software called EZVoice (~$25) if you want to use it fir that. For radio stuff, the tricky part is setting up the volume levels to their “sweet spot” for VOX. Trial and error, but do-able. A+ Lenovo 4330 printer driver for mac.
